Honfleur

Although a modest town, Honfleur was home to many great men, most of them either sailors or artists. These include Eugène Boudin, one of the forerunners of the Impressionist movement, and the genius composer Erik Satie, who have both left their mark on art in various forms.

Religious art is particularly abundant in Honfleur. The few religious buildings that have been able to resist the various assaults of time and men are witnesses to this and among them, Sainte-Catherine's Church and its distinct bell tower.                                                                              With its gaze fixed firmly on the sea, many reminders the towns nautical history have survived. The Lieutenancy building illustrates the strategic position of the town while the Salt Stores also underline its economic importance. Honfleur was also the starting point of many would-be adventurers such as Samuel de Champlain
